Hello From the Warrior's Mom
Posted by Deirdre Gower - Mar 24, 2015
Welcome to our blog. It is a pleasure to be sharing (hopefully over a cup of tea on our respective sides of the web) stories of my journey through motherhood of the bravest boy I know. I can't really say 'boy' anymore, afterall he is a sixteen year old young man - though still mom's little boy. Up until now, I have been able to use 'gorgeous' or 'cute' when complimenting him - but never handsome. Only "big men are handsome" he would tell me - but slowly I have been allowed to slip handsome into my appraisal of him with his new-look gelled hair on our way out. Perhaps this new acceptance, or even appreciation, of the compliment has something to do with going up two phases at school and being surrounded by other sixteen year olds.
Damian, my very own "Warrior on Wheels", gets about in the world with a motorised wheelchair and with limited speech, has been learning to communicate with software on an iPad. He is a bright little guy who takes in everything from the world around him and is often underestimated.
Over the last sixteen years, Damian has been one of my greatest teachers. I've learned that life doesn't always go according to the ideas you have in your mind about how it should be - and that is OK. I will share some of the challenges and joys of both single- and special needs parenting, but more often than not I will be sharing our adventures - of which there have been many. We are adventurers at heart, and Damian is always up for new escapades and challenges.
I'd love to hear your comments or connect through my posts where we may have shared or have similar experiences.
